"It will be just him and I out in some desert in Iran”

Luke Willson has just finished an 8 month stint running tours from Alice Spring out to Uluru. I was lucky enough to catch up with Luke during his last tour just days before he begun his next adventure, cruising home on his Suzuki DR 650. The trek is a three day mission from Alice Springs to his home town of Clare, South Australia. The purchase of this sturdy bike was inspired last year as Luke was travelling through Patagonia in a old hatch back that was struggling with the rough roads that surround the area. Luke was overtaken by a couple of guys on adventure bikes and knew that was the way to travel. Luke and his good friend Darcy are now planning to ride from Australia to London, with the intention to ship their bikes from Darwin to East Timor and from there venture through to London where they will travel through 12 different countries.

Whats inspired you to tackle a trip like this?

Pure adventure mainly and just the sense of achievement that will come along with it, plus the feeling of being alive you know? When you get out there and it’s just going to myself and a good friend. I don’t think i’d get the same out of a trip like this I if were to do it on my own.

It will be just him and I out in some desert in Iran perhaps and I think it will be a real sense of being alive and free and knowing you’re capable of doing what ever you want and then that whole feeling of arriving at your destination and then just casually saying to someone when they ask what are you doing here “well we just rode our motorbikes here from Australia” I think that will be a nice thing to have. For me its just wanting to take my travelling to that next level. I have done a fair bit of travelling now and want to start approaching it a bit more creatively. We aren’t re inventing the wheel by any means. I met a guy in Alice Springs the other day who had been to 44 countries on his motorbike and looked about 35 or something. This guy had been doing this for a long time and was staying at the local hostel. Something went wrong with his bike so he literally took his bike to pieces to fix a part  then put it back together that night and the next day he was gone, so for me what would have cost $600-$700 to get a mechanic to do he just did it at a hostel out the back with his own tools. That just blows our plan out the water we are talking like maybe 12 countries or something like that. then this guy has done 44 and counting, he’s from the states.
