"I crashed their party in a kind of way”

  • Life Story

domm

I’ve lived in Broome all my life, besides a few years in High School. I was born in Derby and spent the first three months of my life there before returning back. The only reason I was born in Derby is because my parents had moved up there to join a mates wedding and then my mother ended up in labour at the same time, so I crashed their party; in a kind of way (laughs). Then yeah after three months we moved back to Broome and that’s where I spent the remainder of my junior years. My senior years were spent down in Perth, which lasted about three years. Basically my footy career ended there, as I fell in love with a bird and moved back to Broome. The guys I was playing footy with then are now  playing AFL. When I compare my skills to theirs it just makes me realise I would have made it if I had made more of a commitment and been more determined with where I wanted to be during that stage in my life.

Sooner or later after deciding not to continue with footy I realised that I needed something else behind me so I began a carpentry apprenticeship at the age of 16. I took that on for three years, which got me out of school in year 10 so I didn’t finish year 11 and 12. When I was 18 I was a threeyear apprentice about to become a tradie. With about six months to go I decided I had had enough. That decision came after I had spent the day beating star pickets into the ground and on one of them I managed to slip and split my shin on the top of the picket and I guess that was the moment that I realised, that was it for me. Then from there I spent the next two years building the Eco Beach Broome resort.
